Conscious Sedation

If you are reluctant to go to the dentist, relax. Our caring staff will put your mind at ease. Conscious sedation can change your life for the better! Conscious sedation is the use of a sedative drugs and can be used for any dental procedure. Erica Elannan, DDS and the staff at our office provide comprehensive dental treatment in a safe, controlled and relaxed environment. Most commonly, oral sedation  is prescribed for relieving anxiety in the hours immediately before a dental appointment and the evening prior to your treatment.  An anti-anxiety or sedative-hypnotic drug is taken the night before the appointment, an hour before going to bed, can help with falling asleep and getting some rest.  You will then take another sedative upon arrivng at the office for your procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and oxygen is administered for five to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation. Your doctor will provide you with pre and post-sedation instructions.

IV Sedation

Dr. Michelle Carlotti, our American board certified oral surgeon provides intravenous (IV) sedation at Dr. Erica Elannan's office in Anthem, Arizona. Dr. Carlotti has received specialized advanced training and is certified by the state Board of Dental Examiners as a specialist IV sedation dentist and oral surgeon. IV sedation, also known as "deep conscious sedation," is thus not as commonly available as other conscious sedation techniques such as oral conscious sedation, but it is a safe and effective treatment for patients with moderate to severe anxiety. The medication is administered directly into a patient's bloodstream, and thus the major advantages of IV sedation are that:

  • It acts quickly to sedate the patient. Oral medications often require an hour or more to take effect.
  • If the patient is not sedated enough during the treatment, the dentist can administer more medication through the IV, and the effect is instantaneous.
  • In addition, the patient will usually have little or no memory of the dental treatment.

Before, during and after the treatment, the IV sedation Dr. Carlotti will monitor the patient's heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. Patients who receive IV sedation are generally not allowed to leave the dental office alone.
